"Criminal Tribes Act"

The term "criminal tribes" refered to nomadic groups classified as "criminals by birth" - this included the Narikurava.

Ethnic groups registered under the "criminal tribes act" had to report regularly to local authorities and have new passports issued for every change of location.

This created not only a stigmatisation but also was an immense restriction of their loved and needed freedom of movement. With the independence of India in 1952 the "criminal tribes act" and the criminalisation of the ethnic groups concerned were repealed. Nevertheless the stigmatisation and discrimination continues to this day.
